An open, friendly smile conveys confidence. When we have healthy teeth and gums, we can smile with confidence. Most of us know someone who has crooked teeth, receding gums or discolored teeth. Often, they are embarrassed about the way their teeth appear to others, and so they are shy about smiling. Those with less-than-perfect teeth often place their hand over their mouth when smiling or laughing. Without even realizing it, they’re very self-conscious because they know their teeth need some work.

This type of person may even allow their awkwardness about smiling to hold them back from trying new things. Someone with healthy teeth and gums and a beautiful smile doesn’t mind going right up to the president of the company and saying hello. They usually aren’t shy about asking for a raise or promotion. Their confidence spills over into every area of their lives, even their personal life. Someone with a confident smile may even seek out and find a better quality of romantic partners than someone with crooked or damaged teeth.

New studies are done all the time on this topic. They basically say that regardless of profession, gender or age, successful people have an amazing smile that is almost contagious. It’s a smile that puts you at ease and makes you believe in them. It can even have a physiological influence on others and that’s a powerful thing.

“Peace begins with a smile.” That is a quote from Mother Teresa. She also said, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” Her simple smile made you feel safe and loved, like everything was going to be okay.

The moment we see someone and shake their hand, we look into their face and internally make judgments about them based upon their smile. It’s such an important part of who we are as individuals that it can either hamper you from reaching your life-goals or help you to move forward and realize your dreams.
