Do You Need to Use a Special Toothbrush When Wearing Braces?

Getting braces on your teeth is a fantastic idea. Within a year or two, you’ll have a flawless smile. However, while you are wearing braces, you will need to take extra care of your teeth. If you choose Invisalign, simply take out the plastic retainer and brush normally. If your gums are sensitive, a softer bristle brush can assist.

Brushing is a little more difficult if you have typical metal braces. For those with braces, most orthodontists can recommend special toothbrushes. These toothbrushes are available at your local pharmacy. They are often labeled Ortho Toothbrush.

With metal braces, it’s better not to use a soft bristle brush because the bristles can break off and become stuck in your braces. It can be tough to get rid of these. If you’ve had problems in the past, contact your orthodontist for a recommendation on an excellent toothbrush.

Brushing for two minutes is recommended by most experts, but three minutes is much better. Of course, an electric toothbrush allows you to brush your teeth more thoroughly in less time. The most important thing is to make sure that all of your teeth are clean. Some dentists advocate brushing each quadrant for 30 seconds.

Brushing at least twice a day is recommended by most dentists. Bacterial plaque will build up if you go too long between brushings, increasing your risk of gum irritation and tooth decay. If you can’t brush after a meal, at the very least rinse your mouth thoroughly. Food particles can be loosened and removed this way.
